Yonggye Station

Outline
Yonggye Station is located in Dong-gu, Daegu, on Line 1 of the Daegu Metro. It sits close to Dongdaegu IC on the Jungang Expressway (Daegu–Busan), making it a unique junction point between metro rail, highway, and intercity bus systems.
The name “Yonggye” comes from the local geography: the hill behind the village resembles a dragon (龍, yong), and a stream (溪, gye) flows nearby. Alternative origins suggest it could be derived from Guryong-ri (“nine dragons”) and Geumgye-ri (“golden stream”).
Station Information
The station is surrounded by a mix of residential areas, factories, and sparse farmland, which explains its historically low ridership. Despite this, it has strategic value because of its proximity to Daegu International Airport’s flight path—passenger planes can be seen landing near the exits.
In 2010, NCSoft used the area for its Aion 2.0 Yonggye Attack promo video, turning the station surroundings into a “dungeon” for April Fool’s Day.
Nearby is Yeongjin Vocational College (Exit 3), and the Dongdaegu JC overpass is within view. North of the station lie the last remaining railroad crossings in Daegu—rare remnants after most level crossings were removed.
Average Daily Passengers
Daily ridership has always been among the lowest on Line 1.
Year | Daily Passengers | Notes |
---|---|---|
2010 | 3,911 | |
2013 | 4,065 | |
2016 | 4,326 | Slight peak |
2019 | 4,233 | Pre-COVID |
2020 | 2,973 | COVID impact |
2024 | 3,847 | Current |
Yonggye ranks at or near the bottom of Line 1 stations, only above extensions like Hayang-eup.
Ridership stagnation is due to development restrictions (airport/air base zone), competition with direct bus routes, and its location between Bangchon and Yulha. However, the nearby Ansim New Town project (north of Singi Station) is expected to triple ridership post-development.
