Sincheon Station (신천역 · Kyungpook National University Entrance)

Overview
Sincheon Station (신천역) is in Daegu on Daegu Metro Line 1 (Station 134), located in Sincheon-dong, Dong-gu. It opened on May 2, 1998.
The station carries the sub-name Kyungpook National University Entrance (경북대입구) — but in practice the main gate is over 1.4 km away, making this one of Daegu’s most infamous “fishing” station names. Most Kyungpook National University students use nearby bus routes or shuttle services instead.

History & Name Origin
- The station name comes from the Sincheon stream, which flows nearby.
- The term Sincheon (新川) literally means “new stream,” but historians argue it was originally a mistranslation of Saenae (샛내/새내), meaning “small river.”
- The current sub-name “Kyungpook National University Entrance” was attached to highlight proximity, but due to distance and bus reliance, it is controversial.
Passenger Use
Sincheon Station has ~9,500 daily passengers (2024), placing it around the middle range of Line 1 stations.
Trends:
- Peaked at 10,592 (2019) before the pandemic.
- Dropped to 7,245 (2020).
- Now stable around 9,000+ daily as nearby neighborhoods redevelop into apartment complexes.
Most demand comes from Sincheon 1–3-dong residents, not university commuters.

- Redevelopment boost: Ongoing apartment projects are expected to raise usage.
- Safety history: Screen doors were prioritized here (installed 2016) after an accident in 2013.
- Historic tie: The area’s name and station identity tie back to centuries of Sincheon stream geography.
